The best time to visit Nijo Castle at a glance
The best time to visit Nijo Castle is spring or autumn if you want flowers, colour and comfortable walking weather. The castle has roughly 300 cherry trees of about 50 varieties and roughly 100 plum trees, and the autumn season runs from late October into early January. The palaces and the long gravel paths are outdoors or only partly air-conditioned, so the season matters more here than at a museum.
No bloom date can be promised for a given year. The ranges below are the castle's general seasons, so check the news just before you travel and keep your plans flexible.

Highs and lows are monthly averages of the daily values. April, May, October and November have milder daytime highs than July and August, and July is the wettest month on average. That says nothing about whether your particular day will be dry.
Plum and cherry blossom
The plum trees stand mostly in the southwest of the grounds and flower from mid February to the end of March, usually at their best from late February to mid March. Cherry season runs from late March through April: mountain and Somei Yoshino cherries in late March and early April, weeping cherries from late March to mid April, and the double-flowering satozakura from early to late April. For the garden layout, see our Nijo Castle garden page. Nara lies close to Kyoto, and the temple Todai-ji there is another place worth seeing in spring or autumn.
Autumn colours and the light-up
Maple, ginkgo, cherry and enkianthus colour at different times, so the whole castle has no single peak day. In autumn 2026 the evening light-up runs from 23 October to 5 December, from 18:00 to 22:00 with last entry at 21:00, and it needs its own ticket. Details are on our Nijo Castle at night page. A day ticket does not replace the evening ticket.
Summer heat
The castle administration warns about heat stroke from about May to October. Most palace routes are not air-conditioned apart from some Honmaru rooms, so it feels as hot inside as outside. Take drink breaks outdoors, away from the palaces, and do not drink while walking. If you come in summer anyway, a day tour in an air-conditioned vehicle is a way to spread the heat over the day.
Crowds and Golden Week
Kyoto's official travel notice for 25 April to 6 May 2026 reported clearly higher visitor numbers across Japan. No reliable queue times exist for the castle, and no day can be guaranteed quiet. Arriving at opening time and booking timed tickets early are the sensible steps.
Closing days to plan around
The castle closes from 29 to 31 December. The Ninomaru Palace also closes on Tuesdays in January, July, August and December, so a summer Tuesday has no Ninomaru visit. On 6 December 2026 last castle entry is at 12:00. The full list is on our opening hours page, and ticket prices are on the tickets page.
