Where to stay near Nijo Castle: the short answer

Where to stay near Nijo Castle depends on what else is on your list. The castle is reached from Nijojo-mae on the Tozai subway line and from city buses 9 and 50 that run from Kyoto Station, so three areas make sense: next to Nijojo-mae, around Karasuma Oike where the Karasuma and Tozai lines meet, and Kyoto Station. This is a comparison of locations and transport, not of hotels or room prices.

Many visitors stay central and join a day tour. A tour with a fixed meeting point also means you do not have to be next to the castle at opening time.

Many visitors choose by transport first. Several Nijo Castle tours start at a fixed meeting point, which makes the choice of area less important.

Near Nijojo-mae

A base at Nijojo-mae puts the castle at the end of your street, and the station is the stop on the Tozai Line. The name Nijo alone does not prove that a property is by the castle gate, so check the exact address on the map before you book. See our opening hours page to plan an early start. The area suits visitors who want to be at the gate when it opens, or who like a quiet walk around the moat in the evening. Restaurants and shops are usually easier to find around Karasuma Oike and Kyoto Station, so decide what matters most for the rest of your stay.

Karasuma Oike

Karasuma Oike is where you change from the Karasuma Line to the Tozai Line, so staying here gives you the subway to the castle and a direct line back to Kyoto Station. Judge walking distances and street noise from the address itself, and zoom into the map to find the station exit. A base here also works well if you plan several short trips across the city with the subway.

Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station is the end point of the HARUKA from Kansai Airport and the start of city buses 9 and 50 to the castle, which helps if you arrive or leave with luggage. On early starts and late returns a base close to the station keeps the transfer short, but not every property near the station suits every budget or need, so compare the offers before you book. Routes and fares are on our getting there page.

Kyoto accommodation tax since March 2026

The tax is charged per person and night, based on the room rate per person.

20,000 to under 50,000 JPY1,000 JPY
50,000 to under 100,000 JPY4,000 JPY
100,000 JPY and more10,000 JPY

The basis is the price including service charges, without meals and consumption tax. You pay at the accommodation unless it was already included in the booking price.

Luggage at the castle

If you arrive before check-in, you can leave bags at the castle. Storage in the main rest area costs 500 JPY. Lockers at the Higashi-Ote-mon ticket office outside cost 300, 500 or 700 JPY for small, medium and large, and lockers inside the rest area cost 200, 300 or 500 JPY. Availability and room for large suitcases are not guaranteed, so leave big bags at your accommodation if you can.

Details on ticket types are on our Nijo Castle tickets page.
